My journey to veganism started in the most unexpected place: Fuddruckers. My parents brought six-year-old me there for a burger. Upon entering the lobby, we were greeted by entire cows hanging from hooks in a glassed-in butcher shop. My mom said, “look, that’s where meat comes from!” That was all it took—I decided right then and there that meat was off my menu for good. From then on, I was a vegetarian, even though my parents had no clue what to feed me (it was the 80s, after all!).
I stuck with it through all my adventures, from working on cruise ships to living and traveling abroad from Thailand, to Saudi Arabia, and over 32 countries in between. No matter where I went, I stayed true to my animal-loving heart. But in 2020, everything changed. A friend of mine bluntly told me she didn’t understand vegetarians because, in her words, chickens and cows live in such awful conditions they’d be better off dead. That conversation was my wake-up call, and I went all-in on veganism.
